Bowel Prep Instructions

Colonoscopy Preparation Instructions
Miralax / Gatorade Prep

You are scheduled for a colonoscopy, a procedure where your doctor will examine the lining of your large intestine using a flexible tube attached to a camera called a colonoscope. If growths or other abnormalities are found during the procedure, the doctor may remove or biopsy these abnormal sites for further evaluation by a pathologist. Please remember that since sedation will be administered, you must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home. If you have questions or need further assistance, call us at (512) - 467-7151.

The following preparation should be closely followed to ensure the best results from your procedure:

You will need to purchase:

  • Miralax, 238g bottle
    Dulcolax laxative, 4 tablets
    64 oz. Gatorade or Crystal Light
    - do not use red colored liquids
    Other assorted clear liquids

  • Optional - for sore bottoms
    - Plain or Aloe Baby wipes, Desitin or A&D ointment

    • 2 Days Prior:
      • Drink at least 8 large glasses of water throughout the day.
      • No solid foods after midnight.
    • 1 Day Prior:
      • Begin Clear liquid diet - Includes water, broth, coffee or tea without milk or creamer,
      • Gatorade, soft drinks, juices, Jell-o
        - Avoid red colored fluids or Jell-o
        Drink at least 8 large glasses of water throughout the day
      • 3 pm - Take the 4 Dulcolax tablets with 8oz water
        - Thoroughly mix entire bottle of Miralax with 64oz of Gatorade or Crystal Light and refrigerate.
      • 5-7pm - Drink 8oz of solution every 15 minutes until solution is finished.
      • Expect to experience frequent loose or watery stools for the next several hours. If you experience nausea or vomiting, take a 15 to 30 minute break, then continue drinking prep solution.
      • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
    • Procedure Day: You may take your essential morning medications with a sip of water unless otherwise directed by your physician. Arrive at least 1 hour prior to the scheduled procedure.
