Dr. Abikhaled Provides Surgical Care for Hondurans in Need

Inspired by One World Surgery’s vision of “a world with safe, timely and accessible surgical and primary care,” Dr. John A. Abikhaled traveled to Honduras in October on a weeklong medical mission with the organization.

During the trip, Dr. Abikhaled partnered with others on visiting surgical teams and Honduran colleagues who run the clinic. The visiting surgical team, made up of general surgeons, orthopedists, gynecologists and podiatrists, provided access to safe surgical care to people who otherwise are unable to access the treatment they desperately need.

One World Surgery estimates that worldwide, 5 billion people lack access to surgery. The organization’s medical mission trips are open to physicians, other clinical participants, nonclinical participants, and family members. The program offers an opportunity for those on the missions to collaboratively provide life-changing surgeries, primary care, and dental services to populations in need.

Dr. Abikhaled saw patients in clinic and performed 16 surgeries through Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos, a nonprofit that provides homes, health services and educational programs to disadvantaged, vulnerable children and families. Those on Dr. Abikhaled’s team performed a total of more than 50 surgeries.

Dr. Abikhaled’s cases were mostly various types of hernia repairs and laparoscopic cholecystectomies (gallbladder removal).

“Most of the patients have been waiting several months or longer for their surgery and are so happy to receive care. We worked hard but we had a fantastic team, and we worked well together, always focused on our goal of delivering compassionate, high quality and safe surgical care,” Dr. Abikhaled said.

“Our Honduran hosts made us feel so welcome, and I’m already looking forward to returning!”
